Cartagena is a Spanish city and municipality located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the autonomous community of the Region of Murcia. It serves as the capital of the Campo de Cartagena region and the Maritime Province of Cartagena, and it is the seat of the Regional Assembly of Murcia, the legislative body of the autonomous community. Additionally, it is the headquarters of the Tourism Department of the Region of Murcia. The city has a population of 216,961 inhabitants (INE 2022), spread across a municipal area of 558.1 km². Situated to the south of the Campo de Cartagena plain, which forms its metropolitan area, the region has a population of 418,686 inhabitants. As a result, Cartagena ranks 23rd on the list of the most populous municipalities in Spain and 26th on the list of metropolitan areas in Spain.
